In addition to the Hamburg and Illinois colleagues, the exchange will include social workers from Birmingham, UK. The theme for the exchange is Social Work and Children Rights: New Approaches. Given cultural, racial, and ethnic differences, exchange participants will consider the impact of the United Nations’ Bill of Rights for Children on social service delivery systems and attempt to identify those interventions and service delivery models that may be universally applicable. There will be a hands-on look at social work practices in schools and social work with the diverse immigrant groups from Africa, the Middle East, eastern Europe, and central/south America. The exchange will conclude with a one-day mini-conference inviting all professionals in Hamburg to participate.

Infertility is a life crisis that causes significant emotional distress – every single month. By the time a couple reaches out to a counselor, they have likely experienced numerous incidents when their feelings were marginalized, ignored, pooh-poohed away, or been shamed into thinking that they should not have any problems dealing with the fertile world surrounding them and just “get over it.” This presentation will provide you with a framework for understanding how to respond to the needs of these couples without increasing their distress.
