The presentation will focus on how the culture of technology affects how we perceive and work with clients and also how they perceive and work with us, their therapists. The presentation will define and address the culture of technology and discuss how various types of technology can be and are used with clients including LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, e-mail, text messaging, etc. The presenters will also focus on the new 2017 NASW Standards for Technology and Social Work Practice.

This three-hour presentation will include an activity where participants will apply their learning to case material.

Attended in full, this workshop fulfills cultural competency requirements for licensure renewal. All courses offered through the NASW-Illinois Chapter meet the continuing education qualifications for LSWs, LCSWs, LPCs, LCPCs, LMFTs, RNs, LPNs, APNs, and LCPs licensed in Illinois as required by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).

About the Speakers

Henry W. Kronner has been a faculty member at several Chicago institutions (Loyola, UIC, Aurora, Northeastern) where he has taught both BSW and MSW students. He has taught the diversity course for many years, and he has also conducted numerous presentations focused on diversity, especially related to the LBGTQ+ populations and other vulnerable populations.He maintains a private practice in Chicago where he provides individual and couple counseling to those who identify as LGBTQ+.

Melissa M. Thompson is a clinical social worker, social activist, and leader in higher education. She is a consultant and keynote speaker who works to support professionals in the fields of social work, higher education, and health care through the development of workshops, seminars and retreats. Melissa is an instructor and director of military social work at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois. In addition to her teaching, Melissa is known for her creativity as an instructional designer.
