Responding to the Opiod Crisis (Chicago)

The presentation will start by focusing on the effects of opioids on the body as well as understanding the current epidemic as well as one specific response to treating it utilizing a variety of tools including medication-assisted treatment. The presentation will then shift to focus on the epidemic from a more local standpoint and develop an understanding of recommended public health interventions and models to provide direct support to individuals, families, and communities.

All courses offered through the NASW-Illinois Chapter meet the continuing education qualifications for LSWs, LCSWs, LPCs, LCPCs, LMFTs, RNs, LPNs, APNs, and LCPs licensed in Illinois as required by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR).


Ramsen Kasha (MS, MBA, LCPC, CADC) has been in the mental health field over seventeen years and with Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation since 2005. He is a licensed clinical professional counselor and a certified alcohol and drug abuse counselor. Ramsen has helped develop gender-specific programming, trauma-informed programming, and opiate specific care using the most updated evidence-based programming as well as integrating computer-based support for clients focusing on longterm recovery management.

Chelsea Laliberte is co-founder of Live4Lali and co-developer of the Lake County Opioid Initiative. Her fight for overdose prevention awareness began when she lost her brother, Alex, suddenly to overdose in 2008. Chelsea has developed policies/programs focused on prevention, overdose response, support, education, and improving care access/availability. Chelsea was a fellow with the Illinois Consortium on Drug Policy.
