Resolving Ethical Dilemmas
Presenter:
  Ruth Lipschutz

Description:  Ethical dilemmas are situation where social workers are confronted by two or more conflicting obligations, which independently would be equally upheld. In an ethical dilemma, acting on one value or duty automatically violates the other one. Ethical dilemmas challenge us to prioritize values, aspects of the code of ethics and applicable regulations. Some areas of competing values may include confidentiality, self-determination, dual-relationships, conflict of interest and best interest of clients. High standards of practice and avoidance of complaints and law suits requires social workers to be able to identify and successfully resolve ethical dilemmas.  In this workshop participants will learn the following:  Clear definition of ethics, How to identify an ethical dilemma, Steps to resolve ethical dilemmas, Template for rank ordering duties, Appropriate use of supervision and consultation, and Documentation requirements.
