A Message From PAC

Election season and November 7th has come and gone and your NASW PAC Illinois has had a very busy few months. In the September/October 2007 Networker, we outlined the endorsement process for our readers and listed the many volunteers statewide who helped us this cycle.

In total, the NASW PAC endorsed 54 candidates for State representative. Of those 54 candidates 52 won in their races for a 96% success rate. In the Illinois Senate, we endorsed 21 candidates and 19 won for a 90% success rate.

Now that the election is over, we ask each of our members to call your legislator and introduce yourself to them as they start their new term of office. What better way to start a new term then to have social workers from all over the state call and be known by name in your home legislative districts. As you do this, contact us by email at: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) on your experiences talking to them and their staff people. We’ll publish some of your responses (with your permission) in future Networkers. If you do not know how to find out the local contact information for your State Representative and Senator, please visit the Illinois State Board of Elections District Locator portion of their site: http://www.elections.il.gov/DistrictLocator/AddressSearch.aspx

Don’t forget to “save the date” – Tuesday, February 27th, for our 2007 NASW Lobby Day in Springfield. Make your voice heard along with hundreds of other social workers. This one day event is the Chapter’s largest and continues to reach out to the entire state. This year, in particular, we need your support and your voice as we talk to our legislators about renewing our licensure act. It sunsets on January 1, 2008. During 2007 we as a social work community will be lobbying them to pass a new act that will then be viable for the next 10 years. Don’t let us down – Support Lobby Day in person!

Are you ready to become more politically involved through the NASW PAC? We can always make good use of a larger PAC committee. Please feel free to contact our PAC Committee Chair Joseph Zefran through our PAC staff member Gary Kenzer at naswpacillinois@hotmail.com.
