April 2017 Highligthed Social Worker of the Month - John Duchene

Our April 2017 Highlighted Social Worker/Member of the Month is John Duchene.  John took some time to answer a few questions I had for him and here's what he had to say:

Q: What do you do as a social worker John?

A: I am currently employed on a part time basis with the Counseling Center at the University of Illinois, CU campus.  In that capacity I provide therapy to students who struggle with a variety of concerns.  My work thorugh 40 plus years has been focused on clinical service as a clinician, supervisor and manager.  Currently, I am moving slowly to retirement and I find that returning to direct practice is a very satisfying way to bring my career to closure.

Q: Can you tell us about your agency or institution in which you practice social work?

A: At the Counseling Center we serve the whole of the U of I campus.  The needs of our students reflect the needs of the general population as well as the unique needs of young people moving toward their independence.  Relationship struggles, substance use, anxiety and depression are among the most often presenting concerns.  The Counseling Center is staffed predominately by PhD psychologists with a smaller cohort of LCSW clinicians.  I have been fortunate to have had wonderful colleagues.

Q: Can you describe any specialties or intersts that you have in the field of social work?

A: As I began my career, I knew that I wished to concentrate my work in the provision of psychotherapy.  Throughout my career I have had the opportunity to be involved in the therapeutic process in hosptial, residential and community based settings as well as in higher education.  Within the area of psychotherapy I have been interested in personality dynamics and development.  As I grow older, I have become more interested in the area of existential psychology.

Q: How long have you been a member of the NASW?

A: I joined the NASW in 1975 while still in grad school and as there was not a licensing mechanism at that time, I applied for the ACSW certification as soon as I was eligible.

Wow!  Thanks so much for sharing JOhn an dit is great to learn more about you as a member of the East Central District!

Please feel free to reach out to me at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) with ideas on upcoming district events or to nominate someone as the next East Central Highlighted Member of the Month.

Take care and I hope to see you soon!
