Social Work Month 2017 East Central District Event

Intermodal Expressive Arts: Using the Creative Process in Clinical Work

Join Dr. Theresa Benson for a 4 hour CEU event on Intermodal Expressive Arts in therapy.  Intermodal Expressive Arts has been used in clinical work as a way of deepening the therapeutic process and move beyond the use of talk therapy to enable the client to access feelings, make unconscious content conscious and engage in meaning-making.  In this workshop, participants will be provided an overview of effective ways to use expressive arts within individual and group counseling, a review of the research literature on the effectiveness of expressive arts in therapy and an opportunity to engage in an expressive arts process.

About the Presenter:

Dr. Theresa Benson is a holistic health educator, expressive arts facilitator and counseling psychologist who incorporates expressive arts, mindfulness and nature-based practices into her clinical work and trainings to facilitate healing and promote holistic health and well-being.  As an intermodal expressive arts educator, she takes a holistic and experiential learning approach with a focus on the development and integration of the cognitive, emotional, physical, social and spiritual dimensions of individuals' lives.  As a clinician, she practices a common factors approach influenced by existential-humanist perspective.  For nine years, she served as the Educator and Program Coordinator of the award winning Counseling Center Paraprofessional Program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Counseling Center where she incorporated expressive arts into her curriculum and teaching approach.  She currently serves as a Staff Psychologist and Training Coordinator at the UIUC Counseling Center and operates a small private practice as well.
