February 2017 - Three Rivers District Update

Deborah Perry, LCSW
Three Rivers District Chair

Hello, Three Rivers District Social Workers! Our networking event on January 20 was enjoyable and informative. We talked about the ins and outs of private practice and also about retirement issues. It was a nice opportunity in the middle of winter to get together. Thank you to all who attended!

We will celebrate Social Work Month in March with a 3 CEU event called, “Silent Epidemic: What a Survivor of Domestic Violence Wishes You Knew,” on Friday, March 10 at Belmont Village at Geneva Road, 545 Belmont Lane in Carol Stream. Registration and breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m. with the presentation starting at 9 until noon. Our presenters will be Judie Caribeaux, MA, LCSW – Executive Director, Family Shelter Service and Lisa Horne, MSW, CDVP – Director of Safer Living, Family Shelter Service.

Domestic violence is a silent epidemic with 1 in 4 women and 1 in 5 men being victims. It is a crime that does not discriminate crossing ethnic, racial, educational, and income lines.  Some victims bear visible signs of their trauma while others have scars that are hidden. What victims have in common is a deep sense of shame, guilt, and embarrassment often blaming themselves for the crime. Odds are you have or are working therapeutically with someone who has a trauma history of abuse.  In this session, you will gain a greater understanding of 1.) the nuanced behaviors of domestic violence, 2.) the impossible dilemmas victims face, and 3.) key strategies for helping victims find hope and healing.

Using inquiry based and cooperative learning models, participants will explore the impact of domestic violence on a client’s ability to thrive.  Activities, videos, and case studies will be used to: 1.) deepen understanding about the complexities of domestic violence, 2.) more easily identify signs of abuse, 3.) expand ability to respond where the client is at, and 4.) add to current repertoire of strategies to help the client thrive.

You will receive 3 CEUs as a participant and the event is free to NASW members and $45 for nonmembers. For more information and to register, go to http://naswil.org/calendar/events/4464/
