February 2019 - Three Rivers District Update

Mary Abbott, LCSW

Hello Kane. Kendall and DuPage counties ! Happy February : )

Hope everyone stayed warm during the most remarkable record low wind chills and temperatures. My thougths were on all those who had to face the elements and was so grateful for all the first responders and social serivce workers out there assisting with those in need and the homeless population . Makes me reflect on how important our charge and work is to assist those in need !

Please join me in March to learn about how to be culturally sensitive when working with the Asian Indian population. This event will be in Elgin and will satisfy the 3.0 CEU cultural competence requirement for your LCSW licensure requirement.

Culturally Sensitive Social Work Practices with Asian Indian Clients in Mental Health Settings

The common myth of the "model minority” suggests that Asian Indian minorities do not experience problems associated with the general population such as financial instability, social-emotional disorders, school-related behavior problems, career difficulties, and family dysfunctions. This presentation is focused on the unique characteristics within the Asian Indian population which every clinician, social worker, and educator should be aware of to effectively support our clients.

Speaker: Dolly Mandrelle is a School Social Worker. Dolly received her Bachelors in Psychology from Aurora University in 1994 followed by her MSW from Aurora University in 1998. Dolly has worked with diverse populations for over twenty years. Dolly’s professional niche is in understanding and working with student’s and families who come from various cultural background. Dolly was born in northern India and immigrated with her family to the United States in 1977 at the age of eight.
