General Election 2004 Wrap Up

Gary Kenzer, ACSW, PAC Illinois Consultant

During the late summer and early fall, NASW Illinois Chapter members were heavily involved in a variety of activities related to the General Election held on November 2, 2004. You have already read about our endorsements for candidates in the state campaigns in the October issue of the Networker. Now it is time to review our activity and plan for the future.

In State races, we endorsed 22 candidates for State House and all but one were elected. That’s a 96% success rate. In the Illinois Senate, we endorsed seven candidates and six out of seven won, an 86% success rate.

On the Federal side, our PACE Field Organizer Mary Gollings has now completed her work with us. During her four months at the Chapter office, she worked on many campaigns and recruited members to assist her in getting out the vote. Mary organized 9 phone banks with NASW volunteers making approximately 4,000 calls for PACE National endorsements.

A review of the Federal races indicates:

US Senate: Barak Obama was endorsed early and won his race  easily. For US Representatives: Nine out of nine wins or 100%. Endorsed candidates were: Bobby Rush, Jesse.

Jackson Jr., Luis Gutierrez, Rahm Emanuel, Danny Davis, Melissa Bean, Janice Schakowsky, Jerry Costello and Lane Evans.

Other news from the National PACE endorsements: While Presidential endorsement of the Kerry/Edwards ticket did not ultimately win, they did win in half of the states where there were National PACE organizers. In the Senate, seven of the state endorsed candidates won, three lost and in the House 90% won.

So where do we go from here? In Illinois, we will continue to support state wide candidates that are friendly to our issues through the PAC fund. If you are interested in helping us attend candidate fundraisers, all you need to do is be on our Legislative Electoral Advocacy Network (LEAN) list. This is the best way to communicate all of our news to anyone who wishes to become involved. Visit the Chapter website at www.naswil.org to sign up.
