HB 5122 Passes in Illinois

Kyle Hillman, NASW-Illinois Chapter Legislative Director

One of the NASW-Illinois Chapter’s major legislative initiatives this session, HB 5122, the last dollar college tuition waiver program for at-risk youth in foster care, passed out of the Illinois Senate on Tuesday, May 29, 2018, by a vote of 37–13. Many thanks to our bill sponsors, Senator Cristine Castro and Representative Chris Welch, as well as to our 2018 NASW-Illinois Chapter Social Work Intern Kathleen Miller, who put in some amazing research work to help the chapter draft and eventually pass this critical legislation. It is now going to Governor Rauner for signature--please contact him to support it.
