Monica Guihot-Chartrand was the 2018 recipient of the Natalie M. Ross Scholarship for Professional Development in Aging. She wrote about her experience attending the Annual American Society on Aging’s (ASA) Aging in America Conference.

How does it feel to be the inaugural Natalie M. Ross scholar to attend the Aging in America (ASA) conference 2018? Empowering!

How does it feel to have experienced a conference that is so well-organized, nationally recognized, and offering the latest trends in working with older adults? Inspiring!

The offerings included national summits, student activities, site visits, general and highlighted sessions, networking events, 60- and 90-minute symposia, managed care academy programs, and collaborating organizations programs. This was an incredible array of opportunities to promote professional growth and share best-practice programs and innovative models.

The intention of the scholarship is to promote professional development in geriatric work. Attending the American Society on Aging conference not only achieved this goal, but also sparked a renewed enthusiasm towards advocacy and direct practice. This conference highlighted the importance of finding partnerships for both physical and mental health outcomes. This has fueled my enthusiasm to find value propositions to potential partners, maintain continuity of services, find funding resources that are sustainable, and show agility in the community partnerships.

Another area of interest for me at the conference was the elaboration on the importance of collective impact and the focus on models of intervention that are standardized and evidence-based. Numerous seminars and workshops offered opportunities to enhance your curiosity. Furthermore, there was a crowd of over three thousand people at the conference that were eager to spend some time with you and further talk about your interests, which made it lively and stimulating.

The Natalie M. Ross Scholarship for Professional Development on Aging is an excellent opportunity to learn more about a field with great potential. I strongly encourage you to apply next year. The 2019 Annual Conference of the American Society on Aging will be on April 15 through 19, in New Orleans, LA. See you there!
