January 2018 - East Central District Update

Kenna Dunlap Johnson

Happy New Year East Central District Members!

I hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season and are staying as warm as you possibly can in this cold central Illinois weather.  I truly enjoy the New Year because, for me, it brings about opportunity to start fresh and create new goals.  I realize that we can do this at any time of the year, but there is something about the first of the year that just makes sense and the first of the year for 2018 was also a Monday, which seemed to work out well for starting fresh.  One of my New Year's goals is to find ways to reach out more to our members.  If anyone is interested in helping with brainstorming ideas for reaching out or with assisting with upcoming events for our district, please let me know.  You can reach me by e-mail at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Upcoming Events -

For starters, I want to say thanks to all that attended our networking event in December.  The event took place in Decatur, IL at the Sol Bistro restaurant.  Thanks to Mary Garrison, former East Central District Chair and Member at Large, for the recommendation.  It was great to meet members from the Decatur area.  We were definitley able to make some new connections at this networking event.

March is Social Work Month!

Our March Social Work Mont event is in the works!  It iwll take place in Danville, IL at the VA Illiana Health Care System.  We will be screening the film, "Almost Sunrise", which won "Best Documentary" by NASW in 2017.  There will also be a panel of speakers.  This will be a half-day CEU event.  More details will come soon so please be on the lookout.  I will also send out an e-mail blast.  for more on the film, please visit the following link:

2018 Advocacy Day is coming!

This is an opportunity to join an estimated 1000+ social workers and students in Illinois to learn about lobbying in our state.  For details, please visit the following link:
