Join the Third Cohort of the Supervisory Leaders in Aging Program and Earn 30 CEUs!

Register now to become an MSW Supervisory Leader in Aging!

Application Deadline: October 1, 2017

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is continuing its popular Supervisory Leaders in Aging (SLA) program for a special one-week session. The SLA program is designed to improve the delivery of health care and social services to older adults by strengthening the supervision of staff providing direct social services to older adults and their families. This innovative professional development program will be implemented as an educational offering providing 30 continuing education units (CEUs), including three units in cultural competency. Participants must be available to attend a one-week training taking place Monday, October 30, 2017, through Friday, November 3, 2017. Trainings will consist of five full-day workshops from 9:00am to 4:00pm (6 hours each day, 30 hours total). While aimed at MSWs working either as supervisors or as managers providing supervision in the field of aging, this program is open to all.

This class requires a minimum number of registrants. You will be notified if this class does not meet the minimum number no later than October 1, 2017.

What can I expect to get out of this program? MSW supervisors can expect the following:

  • to gain gerontological knowledge and enhance their teaching skills to guide practice with older adults and their families
  • to strengthen their leadership skills in supporting interdisciplinary teamwork
  • to benefit from continued peer support, practice, research, and policy updates, as well as from numerous opportunities and events made available through the growing chapter and national network of Supervisory Leaders in Aging.

Will I earn continuing education units (CEUs) for this program? A total of 30 CEUs will be offered for this program which can be used for the 2015–2017 licensure renewal period. Completion of the SLA program in full will fulfill multiple requisites for licensure renewal in the state of Illinois including the following:

  • 30 CEUs
  • 3 CEU credits in cultural competency
  • A minimum of 15 CEUs acquired live and in-person (All workshops will be live and in-person trainings)

What is the expected time commitment for this program? The SLA training will cover 10 essential topics over the span of 5 full-day workshops. Each workshop will be 6 hours in length (9:00am to 4:00pm with one-hour break for lunch) for a total of 30 hours upon completion.

What are the expected outcomes of these workshops? The SLA program bolsters knowledge and skills for supervisors to function as the following:

  • teachers, including advanced individual and group supervision
  • leaders, including leadership in interdisciplinary practice, translating research to practice, and measuring outcomes
  • experts on aging, including biopsychosocial gerontological assessment, cultural competence, older adult mental health, and elder mistreatment and self-neglect.

Workshops are led by seasoned educators and leaders in gerontological social work.

Participants will engage and network with peers in the cohort during workshop sessions, thereby creating stronger connections with other leaders in the NASW-Illinois Chapter.

What will be expected from my work/agency/organization if I am accepted as an MSW Supervisory Leader in Aging? Employers need to agree to provide time for Supervisory Leaders in Aging participants to attend five full day workshops and to support graduates in their efforts to enhance supervision and staff training. Agencies will also be asked to complete brief pre- and post-training questionnaires.

What's the cost?

  • NASW Member (includes 30 CEUs, including 3 CEUs in cultural competency): $600.00
  • Nonmember (includes 30 CEUs, including 3 CEUs in cultural competency, AND a one-year NASW membership): $825.00
