March 2019 - Three Rivers District Update

Mary Abbott, LCSW

Hello Three Rivers ! March is coming in like a lion isnt it ? Can't wait for some sunshine and warmer weather !

March is time to celebrate Social Workers !

This year's theme is ELEVATE !  To me this represents elevating each other as well as others ! It is a great reminder to take care of ourselves . One of the best ways to do that I think is through laughter . Some of you attended an event I had last year on Laughter Yoga ( check it out on you tube ) . There are so many physical and mental benefits to laughing . We have to find a way to combat compassion fatigue and vicarious truama so hopefully you can make it a point this month to take some time to take care of yourself ! If anymore wants to share how they will be celebrating Social Work Month please respond to this email and I can share out with the district : )

I have a couple asks : 1) I am looking for a free venue to host my Ethics Event at the end of April. Does anyone know of a venue I could reach out in our District ( Kane, Kendall or DuPage counties ? ) I would really appreciate any help with this!  2) My seat on the Board of Directors is up this June . If you have any interest in filling this position or any questions please let me know ! Thank you !

Please join me this month on Friday March 15th to learn about how to be culturally sensitive when working with the Asian Indian population. This event will be in Elgin and will satisfy the 3.0 CEU cultural competence requirement for your LCSW licensure requirement.

Event Title :     Culturally Sensitive Social Work Practices with Asian Indian Clients in Mental Health Settings

The common myth of the "model minority” suggests that Asian Indian minorities do not experience problems associated with the general population such as financial instability, social-emotional disorders, school-related behavior problems, career difficulties, and family dysfunctions. This presentation is focused on the unique characteristics within the Asian Indian population which every clinician, social worker, and educator should be aware of to effectively support our clients.

Speaker: Dolly Mandrelle is a School Social Worker. Dolly received her Bachelors in Psychology from Aurora University in 1994 followed by her MSW from Aurora University in 1998. Dolly has worked with diverse populations for over twenty years. Dolly’s professional niche is in understanding and working with student’s and families who come from various cultural background. Dolly was born in northern India and immigrated with her family to the United States in 1977 at the age of eight.
