NASW Illinois Chapter Committee on Racial and Ethnic Diversity

General Purpose

To promote the development of awareness, acceptance, and appreciation of racial and ethnic diversity in the social work profession and our society. The Committee shall identify and prioritize issues and policies of the Illinois Chapter with respect to the diverse backgrounds and needs of its members and those they serve. The Committee will provide recommendations to the Chapter Board regarding practice standards and advancement, member recruitment and retention, and social policy. Committee Responsibilities and Functions

The committee may consist of up to 14 members. The majority of members and its leadership shall be members of diverse ethnic groups as defined by National NASW. It will meet the number of times a year needed to transact its business and as authorized by the program plan and budget and is accountable to the Chapter Board of Directors. It will develop a work plan tied to the Chapter Strategic Plan. Minutes will be kept of each meeting and the committee will make periodic reports to the Board as requested.

Specific Responsibilities

1. To promote cultural competence in social work practice.

2. To promote maximum participation of social workers of diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds in Chapter leadership and activities, and participate with coalitions of related organizations and networks.

3. To review implementation of the association’s Affirmative Action Plan and make recommendations for modifications and implementations of the plan.

4. To promote member proficiency of the Cultural Competency Standards of the National NASW.

5. To provide consultation to Districts with regard to cultural competence.

6. To provide consultation to the Illinois Delegate Assembly on proposed public and professional policies for their impact on people of color, and make recommendations for their acceptance or modification.

7. To communicate with the National Committee on Racial and Ethnic Diversity (NCORED) on yearly activities and outcomes.
