NASW-Illinois Chapter Statement on the Homeless Tent City in Uptown

NASW-Illinois Chapter

The NASW-Illinois Chapter expresses concern over the recent developments and movement of homeless individuals due to the repairs to two Lake Shore Drive viaducts on the northside of Chicago.

The primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance human wellbeing and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty. Social workers promote social justice and social change with and on behalf of clients. The profession of social work has a mandate to address the issue of homelessness from the dual-pronged approach of improving the lives of people experiencing homelessness and advocating for system change.

The social work profession supports the right of all individuals and families to have affordable housing in their community, as well as feeling the inclusivity that a community should bring to each member. Although the city of Chicago has received the legal go-ahead to begin construction on the viaducts, we urge all parties involved, including the city of Chicago, its elected officials in the city council, and others to forge a permanent housing solution which embraces our community and the needs of those who live there.
