2013 NASW Illinois Chapter Statewide Conference: Day Three

Joel L. Rubin, MSW, ACSW, CAE,

I was struck by comments from conference attendees about how professional this year’s event was, how nice the conference hotel, or how rich the offerings in the Exhibit Hall. Frankly, this should not be a surprise but rather an expectation we should have as professional social workers. We work hard and like other professionals, we should have the opportunity to learn and network with our colleagues in the most conducive and comfortable environment. Over the past three days we were able to create that type of professional environment.

Today’s third day of workshop offerings covered a wide range of practice areas and issues like ethics, corrections, cultural competence, social work retirement, and educating police officers to recognize mental illness. We also raffled off our second iPad this afternoon. NASW Illinois Chapter member Chasity Wells-Armstrong was the happy winner.

The past three days also served as an opportunity to reconnect with many colleagues. It was great to see a wide range of past NASW Illinois Chapter leadership either in attendance or presenting workshops.

None of the work and preparation for a three-day conference happens in a vacuum. The chapter is indebted to the work of Kyle Hillman, CMP, the NASW Illinois Chapter Director of Meetings Management who continues to outdo himself with new meeting innovations. We were also assisted by two meetings interns, Britnee Hursin and Alise Zarena, who paid special attention to the myriad of details. The enthusiasm of NASW Illinois Chapter Communications and Membership Manager Nina Nguyen was present throughout the three days as she eagerly signed up new and returning members, and we certainly couldn’t have pulled off the conference without the help of our newest social work intern Julie Miller and all of the student volunteers.

Lastly, thank you to all of our 2013 NASW Illinois Chapter conference attendees. You helped enhance the highly professional and positive environment of this year’s event.
