April 2011 - East Central District Update

Candi Gray, East Central District Chair

East Central District members, social work friends, and colleagues participated in two events on March 23, 2011, to celebrate Professional Social Work Month.

Our first event of the day, Understanding Suicide: Recognition, Intervention and Treatment was attended by over 200 people. It was held at the Illinois State University (ISU) Alumni Center, in Normal, IL, from 7:45am–4:00pm and was an exceptional continuing education program offered by the ISU School of Social Work, the NASW Illinois Chapter, and Prevent Child Abuse Illinois.

Our second program,  the annual East Central District Social Work Awards Celebration and Reception was held that evening at the Sol Bistro Restaurant in downtown Decatur. The event was attended by NASW Illinois Executive Director Joel L. Rubin as well as over twenty district members, social work colleagues, and family and friends of the awardees. This year's awardees included Social Worker of the Year, Mary Garrison, MSW, LCSW, ACSW, assistannt professor at Millikin University and adjunct faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Public Citizen of the Year Kathleen Taylor, executive director of Decatur Family Refuge.

Two exceptional programs both celebrating Social Work Month! For pictures of the events, please visit the East Central District Photo Gallery:
