August 2013 - Student Network SIG Update

As fewer runners clog the lakeshore and we trade in flip flops for boots, one subset of our association is also gearing up for another round of book-buying and caffeinated all-nighters. It’s back to school time for NASW student members. The NASW Illinois Chapter Student Network Shared Interest Group (SIG) addresses the interests and needs of our student members. One way the NASW Illinois Chapter accomplishes this is through publishing articles from students about their experiences at school, in the field, or any other relevant topic in our ‘Student Stand’ column. The August issue of the Networker features a piece written by the NASW Illinois Chapter Social Work Intern, Mary-Margaret Sweeney, and highlights her experience with the chapter and lessons learned about working in a macro practice setting.

With the new school year approaching, the NASW Illinois Chapter is looking for volunteer students from Illinois schools of social work to serve as student liaisons for the 2013–2014 school year! Take part in your professional organization by becoming the liaison between your campus and the NASW Illinois Chapter.

What does an NASW Illinois Chapter Student Liaison do?

  • Liaisons serve as a vital point of contact between the NASW Illinois Chapter and schools. Liaisons will help with the organizing and promotion of possible trips to campus by the NASW Illinois Chapter for candid talks with students identifying student needs as well as presentations about NASW membership, licensure, and networking events.
  • Liaisons will keep their campus informed about and help the NASW Illinois Chapter promote this year’s statewide conference, held October 28–30, 2013, in Lombard, IL.
  • Liaisons also serve as contacts for their school for the annual Advocacy Day which will take place in spring 2014. Since a date cannot be announced until the spring legislative session is announced, student liaisons will help keep their school abreast of important news relating to Advocacy Day as well as organizing their school attendees on the day of the event.

If you are interested in becoming a student liaison, please contact Nina Nguyen, NASW Illinois Chapter Manager of Communications and Membership, at nnguyen [at] naswil [dot] org. We are currently looking for liaisons at the following schools of social work:
