The Illinois Guide for Survivors of Conversion Practices is a new resource, offering support for survivors of the harmful practices known as ‘conversion therapy.’ The guide provides survivors, attorneys and mental health practitioners with instructions on how to report harmful practitioners, an overview of individual rights, and options for pursuing civil action
Why This Matters Now
We’re seeing both a surge in misinformation — including from the White House promoting conversion practices — and a resurgence of the practices themselves.
Real Tools for Real Accountability
This roadmap shows attorneys and clinicians how to:
File licensing complaints through IDFPR that can result in fines, suspensions, or license revocations
Pursue civil remedies under consumer protection laws—one of the few legal pathways for adult survivors
Document evidence with detailed checklists for screenshots, therapy notes, and advertising materials
Navigate complex legal processes with trauma-informed strategies that protect survivors throughout cases that can take 12-24 months

Crisis Support:
The Trevor Project — 24/7 crisis support for LGBTQ+ young people (13–24)
988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline — Call or text 988 (all ages)
Trans Lifeline — 877-565-8860 (all ages)
