February 2025 - Northeastern District Update

NASW-IL Staff

Jacki Brunk (she/her), LCSW

Northeastern District Chair

Welcome to the monthly district update for the Northeastern District!

I’m pleased to announce TWO upcoming events hosted by our district in March, giving social workers and other mental health professionals an opportunity to learn valuable information and earn CEUs.

On Wednesday March 5th from 9am-11am Central Time, we’ll be hosting a virtual event called “Overview of Services and Benefits for People with Developmental Disabilities in Illinois.” In this presentation, participants will learn about programs that serve the developmental/intellectual disabilities population, including programs within EI (Early Intervention), DSCC (Division of Specialized Care for Children), transition employment, and day programs for adults. The PUNS list and waiver services will be discussed, as well as public benefits for people with IDD. This event is presented by Rocio Perez, LCSW, and Susan Agrawal PhD of the ARC of Illinois, and qualifies for 2 CEUs.

On Monday March 31st from 2pm-5pm Central Time, we’ll be hosting a virtual event called “Walking the Rainbow Road Together: Clinical Work with LGBTQ+ Youth.” In this workshop, our presenter Lizzy Appleby, LCSW, will help clinicians explore tools and strategies to work more effectively with LGBTQ+ youth, with a focus on trans and gender expansive youth. Participants will review the concepts of sexual and gender identity through a developmental and narrative lens, including available research on identity development trajectories. The training will use case examples, small group scenario practice and facilitated discussion to develop frameworks and skills for supporting three critical areas of LGBTQ+ youth: identity development, family systems, and social, medical and legal transition. This workshop qualifies for 3 CEUs in Cultural Competence.

NASW-IL DEIAB Committee Statement on President Trump's Anti-DEI Platform

President Donald J. Trump had the opportunity this inauguration week to dispel fears around his administration’s views on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Instead, he doubled down by rolling out several blatantly racist, xenophobic, transphobic, and frankly dangerous anti-DEI executive orders, including but not limited to ending DEI-driven federal government hiring, bringing an end to birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented parents, and designating only two sexes—male and female—to be recognized by the federal government. ASWB Announces Examination Administration Changes for March 2025

ASWB will return to Pearson VUE for examination administration and development beginning in March 2025. During this transition, ASWB will ensure the continued delivery of the very highest quality testing experience to candidates. To facilitate the change in testing administration, there will be a two-week pause in testing between March 14 and March 30. This pause is necessary to allow for the transfer of candidate data from PSI to Pearson VUE. January 2025 Update: 2024 Federal Requirements for IL Social Workers

Litigation challenging CTA enforcement has continued over the past weeks. Effective December 26, 2024, CTA enforcement has been paused pursuant to an order from the Fifth Circuit reinstating the Texas federal court’s nationwide preliminary injunction. This means that reporting companies are still not currently required to file beneficial ownership information and filing deadlines are not being enforced. Read the full article which includes a new FAQ about the preliminary injunction in the NASW Legal Defense Fund article, "Corporate Transparency Act" (NASW Membership required).

2025 NASW-IL Lobby Leaders Program

Essential to the success of our annual Advocacy Day is the NASW-Illinois Chapter Lobby Leaders Program. This one-day program will train individuals how to effectively lobby, become familiar with local state senate and house representatives and other elected officials, and understand how to navigate advocacy tools to effectively represent social work priorities. On Advocacy Day, newly trained NASW-IL Lobby Leaders will help educate and lead social workers through the state capitol to scheduled meetings with their senate and house legislators. They will also serve as the point person for these meetings. Read more about the requirements and apply here: https://www.naswil.org/post/2025-nasw-il-lobby-leaders-program

January 2025 IDFPR Update to LCSW Application Process

We have just been informed of a recent change by the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation (IDFPR) that affects the Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) application process. IDFPR is now required to provide exam approval at the time an applicant submits their license application; this change is aimed to help speed up the timeline between application submission and receiving approval to take the ASWB clinical exam.
