January 2024 - Southern District Update

Diona Shelton (she/her), DSW, LCSW, CATP, CCTP

Southern District Chair

Happy New Year, Southern District!

I hope you had the opportunity to rest, unwind, and recharge over the holidays, and are ready to begin a brand new year. As we bid farewell to 2023, let us embrace a new year of possibilities. A new year offers a chance for new beginnings. Here is hoping the year 2024 is kind to you, and that you experience peace, happiness, and prosperity in the year ahead.

NASW-IL Southern District Chair Diona Shelton (she/her), DSW, LCSW, CATP, CCTP

The beginning of a year is often when many create new goals, establish healthy routines, and become intentional about self-improvement. As each area of focus is admirable as we begin the new year, I encourage you to recognize the importance of tending to your mental health. With the prevalence of mental health conditions being on the rise, it is important to recognize that mental health is just as important as physical health. It is crucial to continue to destigmatize mental health and to create healthy habits and routines that promote mental wellness, not only in the month of January but all year round. When we are intentional about taking better care of ourselves, we can take the best care of others.

Best regards,

Dr. Diona Shelton, DSW, LCSW, CATP, CCTP

NASW-IL Southern District Chair

Ask NASW-IL: What’s the status on the alternative to the ASWB exam for the LCSW?

This spring, the NASW-Illinois Chapter, with a coalition of advocates, was able to support passage of a bill which provides an alternative to the ASWB exam requirement for LCSW licensure. As of the time of this writing, new applications are expected to be accepted shortly after the bill takes effect on January 1, 2024. The NASW-Illinois Chapter is still waiting for official forms and procedures to be posted by the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation (IDFPR), hopefully in early 2024. Once the department releases this information, we will be able to provide a more in-depth article on the steps to complete the application. Until then, we encourage you to keep checking our News page for new information or sign up for our news and events e-mail list here. You can also read more about the new law here.
