October 2020 - East Central District Update

Mary Garrison, LCSW, ACSW East Central District Chair

Hello East Central District Members!

Fall is here and the best part is that means it is boot season. We have just less than a month before election day, and I know that stress levels are high with all we have on our plates—let’s do our part and get as many people to vote as we can!

Welcome to our newest members and to those that have renewed your membership. We are so glad you are a part of the NASW-Illinois Chapter family.

We have an upcoming CEU event for our district that I hope you will consider attending. The event will take place virtually on Friday, October 9, 2020 from 12:00 to 1:00pm. Heather Kaloupek, LCSW, will present, “Engage Parents and Maintain the Therapeutic Alliance with Child Clients.” Those who work with children know that it can at times, be difficult to determine who your client is. This workshop will identify strategies for parental engagement while maintaining the therapeutic alliance with child clients. Here is the link to register; I hope you will join us: https://naswil.wufoo.com/forms/43020100920east-central-district-event/

CHAPTER NEWS

NASW-Illinois Chapter Task Force on Racial Justice

Some of you may have noticed our recent news item about the NASW-Illinois Chapter Task Force on Racial Justice. The task force will be releasing their survey to the chapter membership in early October, and they will be looking for full member participation. Please be sure you are opting in to receiving chapter communications via e-mail to ensure receiving this important survey which will help to inform the chapter’s future advocacy efforts. Check your e-mails in early October for the survey when it is sent out! All responses will be due by Sunday, October 18th. Thanks to task force co-chairs Latesha Newson and Kristin Rubbelke for leading the group in developing this survey.

Social Justice & COVID-19 Resources

In addition to the COVID-19 sub-tab on our news page, the chapter has also created a social justice sub-tab for news and information pertaining to social justice in Illinois. You can find both either at the links below as well as national’s extremely valuable COVID-19 resources page.

Registration Open! Rethinking Ethics: 2020 NASW-Illinois Chapter Virtual Conference

This year’s Rethinking Ethics: 2020 NASW-Illinois Chapter Conference will be taking place on Thursday, November 19, 2020, in an all virtual format. Meet with other social work professionals from around the state to earn up to 6 CEUs, including licensure requirements for ethics and trainings on sexual harassment prevention and mandated reporting. Updates on Licensure Renewal & Telehealth Practice During COVID-19

Two of the most frequently asked questions we’ve been getting from members over the last few months is whether the IDFPR in-person requirements for CEUs will be waived for the current licensure cycle and whether they can continue to see clients via telehealth platforms when they/the client/etc. are in different states. In case you missed it, read more at the links below:
