WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) implores the Biden-Harris Administration to immediately cease punitive actions against Haitian asylum seekers in Del Rio, Texas along the U.S. - Mexico border and instead provide humanitarian assistance and supports to help them cope with compounding crises. The deplorable treatment of Haitian migrants, including reported acts of physical violence and racist rhetoric by Customs and Border Protection (CPB), is inconsistent with the administration’s declared vision of a fair and humane immigration system. Haitian children and families desperately seeking refuge as a result of compounding traumas, including the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse in July and the devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake in August. They should be met with hope and solutions, not physical violence and deportation. We call on the administration to investigate and hold CBP accountable for acts of violence against Haitian migrants in Del Rio, provide humanitarian assistance (including mental health and social care supports), ensure that migrants are fairly processed, offer refuge to those seeking asylum, and cease using the Title 42 program to unjustifiably expel them. We owe them nothing less.
