We are elated to announce that our efforts in advocating for the social work profession were successful, and that IDFPR has now released a new guidance for social workers and clinical social workers that allow for waiver of the in-person CEU requirement for the current 2021 licensure cycle. You may now utilize any mixture of in-person, live virtual, or virtual trainings to reach your 30-hour CEU requirement. We thank our members who reached out to the department, the governor’s office who has been incredibly helpful during this pandemic, and the department for working with the chapter to resolve this issue, thus allowing social workers enough time to plan and acquire their needed CEUs for licensure renewal.

You can read the full guidance here.
Please Note: You are still required to acquire the required trainings for this licensure cycle including obtaining 3.0 hours of ethics, 3 hours of cultural competency, 1.0 hour in sexual harassment prevention, and completion of a mandated reporter training that fulfills the statutory requirements. Read more about the new 2021 requirements that were shared earlier this year here.
Additionally, the current waiver of in-person CEUs for the current November 2021 renewal deadline does not waive or modify any statute, rule, or regulation concerning the licensure of or practice of Clinical Social Work or Social Work set forth in the Clinical Social Work and Social Work Practice Act, 225 ILCS 20/11, or its Administrative Rules, 68 Ill. Admin. Code 1470. As of now, the next licensure cycle beginning December 1, 2021, and ending November 30, 2023, will return to requiring that half of the 30 required educational CEUs be obtained in-person.
Please know that the NASW-Illinois Chapter will continue to monitor and advocate on behalf of Illinois social workers with IDFPR officials and state leaders about issues pertaining to the profession. Support our efforts by making sure to maintain your NASW membership.
