In aftermath of guilty verdict in the death of Daunte Wright, NASW says more efforts needed to shape public policy
WASHINGTON, D.C. - A jury has found former police officer Kim Potter guilty of first and second-degree manslaughter in the killing of Daunte Wright. Although the verdict will not bring Daunte Wright back, and our hearts are still broken over his death, it offers a small glimmer of hope that we can live in a community where police are held accountable for harming Black and Brown people.
We must continue to question the current police state and consider how the scourges of white supremacy, racism and oppression compel us to fundamentally reshape public safety and community protection. This includes investing in care and community, not over-investing in police.
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), in Washington, DC, is the largest membership organization of professional social workers. It promotes, develops, and protects the practice of social work and social workers. NASW also seeks to enhance the well-being of individuals, families, and communities through its advocacy.
