Important Change Made to Required Mandated Reporter Training with Implicit Bias Section

The state has made a recent change that affects continuing education requirements for all renewing social worker license-holders in Illinois.

NASW-IL members receive real-time notices about these changes as announced by IDFPR. To get these alerts which save YOU time and money, join/rejoin NASW today!

The state requires that all Illinois social workers who work with children must fulfill the mandated reporter training with implicit bias section requirement once every three licensure cycles (i.e., one in every six years). This is different than previous requirements which required the training be obtained every licensure cycle.

There were no changes made to course content to fulfill the training requirement—currently, there is no timed element (e.g., one hour of CEUs) to fulfill this training requirement, nor does it have to be a CEU, but there are content-related requirements as required by the Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act (ANCRA).

Questions

  • What if I already took a mandated reporter training with implicit bias section this licensure cycle (2023–2025)? You can still use the CEUs obtained from the course toward the 30 CEs required for licensure renewal. You won't have to take the course again for 3 licensure cycles, i.e., the 2029–2031 licensure cycle.

  • What if I took a mandated reporter training with implicit bias section last licensure cycle (2021–2023) but not yet this cycle? You don't have to take the training this cycle, but you will need to take it in 2 licensure cycles, i.e., the 2027–2029 licensure cycle.

  • If I don't work with children, do I need to fulfill this requirement? If you do not work with children in any professional or official capacity, you do not need to fulfill this requirement but you may still take the training for CEUs.
