NASW Texas shocked, saddened by shooting at elementary school in Uvalde

NASW-IL Staff

AUSTIN, TX—The National Association of Social Workers Texas Chapters shocked and saddened to hear of the shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, TX, today. Our hearts go out to the 15 victims, their families and everyone present at the school, in addition to the surrounding community. We hope that mental health providers are on hand to offer support and care to anyone involved as well as the greater Uvalde community. Schools should be safe, supportive havens for students, and we are appalled that anyone would target this space with an act of violence. We encourage the Texas legislature to review the steps it takes to obtain a firearm in Texas, and explore all avenues that strengthen school safety and help prevent tragedies like this from happening in the future.

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), in Washington, DC, is the largest membership organization of professional social workers.
