January 2022 - Jane Addams District Update

Patricia Schofield, Jane Addams District Chair

Hello Jane Addams District Members

May this new year bring good health, hope and peace to all. As always, welcome to all new and renewing NASW members. Know that your continued support of NASW and its mission allows us to identify gaps in services, bring public issues to light, and shape legislative policy.

Did you know that in Illinois, nearly 300 new laws took effect at the start of the new year? These laws include everything from excused mental health days for students, to a minimum wage hike, to criminal justice reform and more. On the NBC (Channel 5) website I found 50 new laws we should know about. To read the article follow this link: https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/chicago-politics/hundreds-of-new-laws-now-in-effect-for-illinois-in-2022-here-are-50-to-know-about/2719038/

If you are interested in Illinois government and want to keep informed about laws before/as they are being written, I suggest you watch the NASW-Illinois Chapter Advocacy page: https://www.naswil.org/advocacy-alerts

Federal Rule to Prevent Surprise Health Care Billing

Under a new federal rule to protect consumers from surprise health care bills, clinical social workers (CSW) and other health care provider types must, provide a good faith estimate (GFE) of expected charges that may be billed for items and services to individuals who are uninsured or who are self-pay. The GFE must be provided both orally and in writing, upon request and within specific timeframes. Check out the NASW members active thread on MyNasw board or follow this link: http://www.socialworkblog.org/practice-and-professional-development/2021/12/federal-rule-to-prevent-surprise-health-care-billing/

2019–2021 LSW/LCSW Licensure Renewal

Hopefully by now everyone is aware of the frequent changes IDFPR has made during this licensing cycle. If you are struggling to get your license renewed or have questions NASW has been monitoring and responding to member questions about renewal or updates as they are announced, please make sure you are enrolled in the MYNASW Community and check it out.
