August 2020 - Northeastern District Update

Lynn Zakeri, Northeastern District Chair

How was your July, and how are you handling your back-to-school mentality in August? Regardless of your situation, whether you are a teacher, student, parent, grandparent, or Illinois resident, this is a mentality that is affecting us all in different ways right now. I hope you are taking care of yourself and have people that take care of you as you take care of so many others.

Thank you to those who participated in our CEU event online last month. I am still thinking about it. Our next event will be in about two months. Look for an e-mail from me soon once the details are worked out. I wanted to choose a speaker that could speak to trauma as that word is so relevant to all of us.

Another region of our NASW-Illinois Chapter is hosting Jonathan Nye who did our fall event on ethics in 2019. If you missed him, the registration information is here:

August 27, 2020, from 9:00am to 12:00pm via GoToWebinar Ethics: Understanding, Participation, and Avoiding: The Social Worker's Role in Our Courts Our instructor, Jonathan Nye is a practicing attorney in Illinois. He has developed a philosophy of assisting human service providers in avoiding litigation, maintaining confidentiality, and assisting providers in managing their practices with insight into the potential legal pitfalls inherent to such practices. Jonathan Nye's workshop is always met with enthusiasm, it is timely, informative, and leaves you wanting more. This presentation will cover the social worker's role in child abuse related matters, family law, probate, guardianship, worker's compensation, social security and disability. In addition, social workers will be provided with resources to identify how and under what circumstances the court may ask them to participate, and how to avoid participation in such matters.
