June 2024 - Southern District Update

Diona Shelton (she/her), DSW, LCSW, CATP, CCTP

Southern District Chair

Hello Southern District!

I cannot believe that we are diving into the second half of 2024 and have entered the summer months. Time certainly moves fast. While we catapult into the change in seasons, it has come to that time when we must also change in leadership. It has been my utmost pleasure to serve as your district chair throughout the years. I initially began this role with the desire to be of service to my chapter. Never in a million years could I have anticipated how rewarding it has been to meet so many social workers in various practice capacities, be a part of social policy and change efforts, and provide education to those with whom I have the pleasure of calling my dear colleagues. I must say that before I stepped into this leadership role, I was unaware of how hard NASW truly fights to preserve the integrity of the profession and how incredibly essential the association is to forging positive change in the communities in which we serve. I have no doubt that the association will continue to do the great work which it is called to do!

Although it is bittersweet that my term of office is ending, I am confident that our new southern district chair, Staci Knox, will continue to serve the association and the southern district well. I warmly welcome her and look forward to the knowledge, skills, expertise, and leadership that she will bring to the association. While I am not a person for long goodbyes, I wish to leave you with encouragement to continue the wonderful work that you do. I say this time and time again, social workers are often the glue that holds everything together. May each of you continue to shine brightly like the diamonds you are and remain strong in the fight for social justice and equality for all humankind.
