Across the United States, communities are experiencing harm. Families are afraid to leave their homes. Children are impacted at school, and neighborhoods are destabilized by fear. This is not safety or justice, and it has no place in our democracy.
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has long warned against fear-based policies that rely on force instead of care. The militarized responses carried out by ICE result in significant trauma to the communities we serve.
Social Workers Educate!
As social workers, we have a vital role to play. We must use our voices, training, and platforms to share accurate information about how harmful immigration enforcement impacts families, communities, and essential services. NASW calls on policymakers and federal agencies to immediately halt harmful enforcement practices. We must commit to approaches that prioritize safety and humanity. Fear, intimidation, and murder have no place in our democracy.
On January 24th, another U.S. citizen was killed by federal immigration enforcement. This incident is not isolated; it reflects a dangerous pattern that threatens community safety and public trust.
Our Ethical Responsibility
As social workers, our ethical responsibility is clear. We must:
Protect human dignity
Demand transparency and accountability
Advocate for systems rooted in care, not intimidation
Silence is not neutral. We must speak out against injustices and advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves.
Social Workers Activate! Act Now!
Support community-based organizations, mutual aid, and mental health resources that protect and heal our neighborhoods. We must work together to create a safer environment for everyone.
Please contact Congress at (202) 224-3121. Demand transparency, accountability, and an end to fear-based enforcement practices. Amplify YOUR social work voice.
The Importance of Community Support
Building a strong community is essential for fostering resilience. When we support one another, we create a network of safety and trust. Community-based organizations play a crucial role in this process. They provide resources, education, and support to those in need.
By engaging with these organizations, we can help address the immediate needs of our communities. This includes providing mental health resources, legal assistance, and advocacy for vulnerable populations.
The Role of Education in Advocacy
Education is a powerful tool in advocacy. As social workers, we must educate ourselves and others about the issues facing our communities. This includes understanding the complexities of immigration enforcement and its impact on families.
We can host workshops, create informational materials, and engage in discussions that raise awareness. By doing so, we empower our communities to take action and advocate for change.
The Future of Social Work
The future of social work lies in our ability to adapt and respond to the needs of our communities. We must remain vigilant and proactive in our advocacy efforts. This means staying informed about policies and practices that affect our clients and communities.
We must also continue to build relationships with other organizations and stakeholders. Collaboration is key to creating lasting change. Together, we can work towards a future where safety and justice are prioritized for all.
In conclusion, the NASW-Illinois Chapter aims to be the essential hub for social workers in Illinois. We want to help you grow professionally, stay informed on important issues, and connect with a strong community. We are here to support you throughout your career, from licensing to ongoing education and advocacy.
Let us stand together in solidarity and work towards a safer, more just society for everyone.
